Henry Jacques, perfumery as a private art

For most of its life the house composed only for individuals, by appointment, in crystal. It opened its doors to the public late and reluctantly, and it remains the standard for what haute parfumerie means.

4 September 2026

Henry Jacques was founded in Paris in 1975 by Henry Cremona, and for decades it had almost no public face at all. Its clients were private. Its fragrances were composed for them, one at a time, and finished in crystal. The house did not advertise, did not distribute, and did not need to.

When it finally began to open boutiques, it brought that discipline with it. The collections are small, the concentrations are high, and the flacons are made to be kept for a lifetime rather than replaced next season. A Henry Jacques boutique feels less like a shop than a private salon, which is precisely the point.

What haute parfumerie means

Henry Jacques earns the phrase in the couture sense: the work is made to measure or in very small editions, from materials chosen without regard to cost, by people who expect the result to be worn for years. Nothing about it is designed to be discovered quickly.

Why it is the standard here

Scented Emotions is built on the belief that a fragrance should be met slowly, in company, and understood before it is worn. Henry Jacques has been proving that for fifty years. It is the house Stacey holds up when someone asks what the top of the craft looks like.

Houses and perfumers in the journal are written about as subjects of admiration. The houses carried in Double Bay will be announced when the boutique opens.
